CARDIOVASCULAR SERVICES
CARDIOVASCULAR SERVICES

Ethiopia and most of Africa has very limited to no access to lifesaving emergency cardiovascular services and there are disproportionately low numbers of fully trained interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in the region. Therefore, Heart Attack Ethiopia will partner with local government and other nongovernmental organizations to support the establishment of advanced cardiovascular centers and service lines and will use a mission based group of cardiovascular specialists to provide a sustainable cutting-edge cardiovascular care to the people of Ethiopia and beyond.

Infrastructure Development
Infrastructure Development

We collaborate with local healthcare facilities and stakeholders to both build and improve existing medical facilities and infrastructures for advanced cardiovascular care to manage all cardiovascular emergencies and beyond. This includes providing essential medical equipment, supporting the establishment of cardiac care units, and facilitating the training of local staff in specialized cardiac procedures.

MOBILE CLINICS AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS
MOBILE CLINICS AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS

To reach underserved communities, we organize mobile clinics and outreach programs. These initiatives bring medical professionals, diagnostic equipment, and essential healthcare services directly to remote areas, ensuring that individuals have access to screenings, consultations, and basic medical care.

Capacity Building
Capacity Building

We provide training and capacity building programs for healthcare professionals, focusing on the latest advancements in cardiovascular care. By enhancing their knowledge and skills, we aim to strengthen the local healthcare workforce and improve the quality of cardiac care across the region.

Community Health
Community Health

We conduct community health education campaigns to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke, targeting both urban and rural areas. These campaigns include interactive workshops, health fairs, and educational materials that emphasize the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, early detection, and preventive measures.

Research
Research

Heart Attack Ethiopia actively engages in research and data collection to better understand the prevalence and risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke in the region. This data helps us tailor our interventions, advocate for evidence based policies, and measure the impact of our initiatives.

POLICY ADVOCACY AND PARTNERSHIPS
POLICY ADVOCACY AND PARTNERSHIPS

We work closely with government entities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to advocate for policies that prioritize cardiovascular health. By forming strategic partnerships, we aim to influence policy decisions, secure funding, and create a supportive environment for preventive measures, early intervention, and access to quality care. Together, let’s create a healthier future where heart attacks and strokes are preventable, and everyone has access to quality cardiovascular care.

Heart Attack Ethiopia (HAE) leads a nationally integrated cardiovascular training and capacity-building program designed to address Ethiopia’s critical shortage of advanced cardiac specialists. Through a formal partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia and Amrita University, India, HAE facilitates long-term, high-level training for Ethiopian medical professionals who return to serve permanently within the national healthcare system. This program represents a strategic shift from short-term interventions toward sustainable, nationally owned solutions for cardiovascular care.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality in Ethiopia. Despite the growing burden, access to advanced cardiac care remains extremely limited due to a severe shortage of specialized professionals. While international medical missions have saved many lives, they cannot meet long-term national demand. Sustainable cardiovascular care requires building Ethiopia’s own permanent workforce, professionals trained to deliver advanced care, train others, and strengthen the health system from within. HAE Training & Capacity Building programs are designed for fully trained physicians and nurses committed to returning home to care for patients with life-threatening cardiovascular and neurological conditions.

Candidates for each training track will be selected through a rigorous, structured, and competitive process. Trainee progress will be continuously monitored and evaluated under joint oversight by two dedicated program directors—one appointed by Amrita University and one from the HAE Global Faculty—ensuring shared accountability and quality assurance.

This dual-institution, multimodal evaluation framework ensures high training standards, transparency, and continuous quality improvement across all training programs.

This program operates under a formal tripartite partnership that ensures national ownership, quality training, and long-term sustainability.

Upon completion of training, all trainees will return to Ethiopia and commit to serving within the public healthcare system and HAE-affiliated hospitals for the required service period (two years of mandatory service upon completion of a one-year training program and four years of mandatory service upon completion of a two-year training program). During this time, they will apply their advanced skills and expertise to address the significant backlog of patients awaiting care, including many children and young adults, by delivering timely, lifesaving cardiovascular treatment and helping restore dignity, hope, and life to families and communities.

Heart Attack Ethiopia’s Training and Capacity Building programs are led by a distinguished group of global physician-educators and clinical leaders committed to sustainable, ethical, and high-impact healthcare development in Africa. Each training program is overseen by dedicated Program Directors who provide academic leadership, clinical oversight, mentorship, and continuous evaluation throughout the training period and the post-training service commitment.
